Discussion 1:

The shortage of healthcare workforce in the United States have tremendous effects on the healthcare system. The effect cannot be over emphasized; however, this discussion will address its limited access to Care, increased workload and burnout, and decreased continuity of care. 

1. Limited Access to Care: A shortage of healthcare professionals, such as physicians, nurses, and allied health personnel, can result in limited access to care for patients. This can particularly affect individuals in rural and underserved areas where the shortage tends to be more pronounced. 

1. Increased Workload and Burnout: Shortages in the healthcare workforce often led to increased workloads for existing healthcare professionals. This can lead to increased stress, burnout, and diminished job satisfaction among healthcare workers, ultimately impacting the quality of patient care. 

1. Decreased Continuity of Care: Inadequate staffing levels can disrupt the continuity of care for patients. Patients may have to see different healthcare providers for the same condition or receive care from unfamiliar providers, leading to fragmented care and reduced quality of care.  

CHALLENGES / EFFECTS OF WORKFORCE SHORTAGE ON HEALTCARE PROFESSION 

The effects of workforce shortage on healthcare profession increases workload and stress. Healthcare professionals in areas with workforce shortages often experience increased workloads as they are required to care for a larger number of patients or take on additional responsibilities. This can lead to higher levels of stress and burnout. These increased demands on healthcare professionals can negatively affect their mental and physical well-being, job satisfaction, and work-life balance. Hence, the overwhelming workload has forced many to early retirement especially during the covid. “The “great resignation” alongside the Covid-19 pandemic has reshaped the way people think about work. Indeed, for many industries over the last year, finding sustainable and reliable employees has been a difficult challenge, forcing many organizations and businesses to cut services or even close their doors. (Balasubramanian, 2022). 

SOLUTIONS TO SHORTAGE OF HEALTH CARE WORKFORCE TO THE US HEALTH CARE SYSTEM.   

Some of the solutions to healthcare workforce shortages requires efforts to expand educational opportunities, increase the number of training programs, and improve recruitment and retention strategies. “Regulatory bodies, including CMS and CMS-approved accreditors, such as the Joint Commission, could scale back regulations and standards that add to nursing workloads.” (Costa & Friese, 2022). These measures can help ensure an adequate supply of healthcare professionals, enhance access to care, and maintain the quality and safety of the healthcare system.
